The Asian
Touring Car Series (ATCS) provides the vital link between a powerful racing
vehicle and the spectator by making the cars, outwardly at least, the same as
road cars.
This
association made by the spectators translates into bigger sales for the
manufacturers, which in part explains the presence of the biggest names in the
auto industry in this type of racing.
Fans get
to see their favourite cars in action, and from the past to the present the
ATCS has featured popular models such as Alfa Romeo, BMW, Chevrolet, Honda,
Proton, Peugeot and Toyota.
This year,
the regulations have been altered to create even closer battles among
competitors. There will be no more Divisions within the series and all cars
will follow the FIA Super Production regulations, which means cars eligible are
two-wheel drive cars with normally-aspirated engines with a maximum capacity of
2000cc with limited bodywork modifications in order to preserve the familiar
original look of the car.
Participating
drivers are professionals of varying backgrounds and most are highly
experienced racers from around the globe.
The
winning formula of quality grids of affordable, closely matched cars and
skilful drivers has resulted in a worldwide surge in popularity, placing
Touring Cars second only to Formula 1 in mass appeal.
Under the
banner of the Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS) and the expert management of
Motorsport Asia, ATCS is among the premier touring car championships in the
world.
