DRIVER UPDATE : Formula BMW : Ho-Pin Tung

Chinese racing driver Ho-Pin Tung impressed all in his Porsche Carrera Asia Cup debut weekend with a third placed finish in Round 2. The Series was at Shanghai International Circuit as the support race for the FORMULA 1 UBS CHINESE GRAND PRIX.

Despite having some difficulties over the weekend, Ho-Pin’s first outing is considered a success. Having struggled with the balance of the car on Saturday, he was unable to do better than an eighth placed finish.

“I suffered quite some understeer, which occurred mainly in the long corners, of which there many here” he said on Saturday after the race.

But things looked better on Sunday when they managed to get a better balance for the car and achieved a third place finish as a result.

The reverse grid meant Ho-Pin started on pole in Sunday’s Round 2 race. He had a splendid start and created a gap of more than four seconds. Ho-Pin was keeping a good pace leading the pack but tyre degradation made it possible for his fellow contenders to close the gap, including his Team Star-Chase teammate, Alexandre Imperatori, who took the eventual win.

“I had to fight for my third position, I am glad with success!” A beaming Ho-Pin stood proudly as he saw the Chinese flag being raised above the podium for him. “Next race hopefully two steps higher” he said with a smile.

“I would like to have raced with my team mate for both wins. The balance was better today, but still not as I wanted it to be. We will have a close look data and try to improve so next time I can challenge Alex.

“I have full confidence in my team and I look forward with great expectations to the next round” ended Ho-Pin.
