DRIVER UPDATE : Darryl O’Young : PCCA

Hong Kong race driver Darryl O'Young earned his best result in the Round 5 FIA GT1 World Championship in Portugal. Overtaking 9 rivals in first 3 laps of the race from the back of the grid, finishing 4th with his Dutch teammate Peter Kox.

O’Young and Kox were the fastest pair in free practice session, and took 5th position in Qualifying. However, Kox was kicked off the track by a McLaren in the Qualifying Race after the driver missed the braking point, leaving O’Young unable to compete in that race. The result was a last row starting position for the #25 Reiter Engineering Lamborghini Gallardo for the Championship Race on Sunday.

In Championship Race, the race driver from Hong Kong responded to start the race for the first stint. He did not have anything to lose in the last row, had a fantastic start and gained an incredible 7 places in the first lap. O’Young maintained his pace throughout the second lap and was up to 5th by the following lap.

He then handed the Gallardo over to Kox, who then set the fastest lap and overtaking for 4th in the very final corner of the race.

O’Young commented after race. "It has been a very positive weekend overall. We were immediately on the pace since the first practice and the team worked together well in order to make progress at each stage of the weekend.

“I had my best drive of the season as I was able to bring the car from 14th up to 5th in the first 3 laps of the race. I had a good pace to stay with the leaders before passing the car to my team mate Peter Kox. Peter drove well to advance us up to 4th place on the final lap of the race.

“I'm slightly disappointed to not be on the podium as we were so close, but our progress is very positive and we will continue fighting hard to get our first win of the season. This weekend has been great team work!”

Next race for Darryl O’Young will be at the FIA WTCC Round 15 & 16 in Brazil, from 20th to 22nd of July. The FIA GT1 World Championship will take a summer break until August for before continuing in Beijing, China.
