|Hammam Takes Second Win and Championship Lead|
Tunku Hammam Sulong had the perfect weekend claiming his second win at the GT3 Asia Round 4 during the Autobacs Super GT 2010 Series. The Malaysian driver, in his Arrows Racing Lamborghini, fended off the fight from the fast improving Craft Racing Ginetta G50’s to move to the top of the points table heading into the next race.
Frank Yu and Samson Chan had the better start and took Hammam heading into turn 1 but Hammam managed to find a way past Chan after the first few turns and began his charge on Yu. The Hong Kong driver managed to hold off the challenge for almost the whole lap before Hammam got past him on the inside of turn 15.
From there on, Hammam began to pick up his pace and held the lead all the way to the chequered flag for his second win of the weekend.
“Well it was not as easy as it looked. Actually Frank was very very fast off the start line. I tried to keep pace but he had maybe half a car length over me and he was edging to the right so I didn’t have room to squeeze myself in so I had to move to the other side and I lost my position to him.
“I tried to push him but instead he held his line and for almost one lap until turn 15 where I braked a little later than him and went on the inside and managed to get him.
“I think the Ginettas are getting faster and faster and I believe, as Frank was saying yesterday, by Korea they are going to get everything completed and we will be in for some fight” said Hammam, tired but happy.
Meanwhile, Yu had the battling duo of Chan and Dilango Racing Sri Lanka driver, Dilantha Malagamuwa, right on his tail. Chan found an opening and made his move on his teammate to take second and immediately set out to open a gap.
“It was a really interesting start. Actually I managed to get by Tunku just before the end of the straight but I thought there was no point going crazy, his pace is quicker so I might as well let him get on with it. Then somehow I managed to get past Frank.
“The team has done a very good job as they have overcame alot of problems. We are happy both cars are on the podium and the pace is picking up” ended Chan.
Yu was left to fend off the fast charging Malagamuwa in the Porsche 997 Cup M. The duo put on a good show, driving nose to tail for half of the race but they held their positions all the way to the chequered flag.
“I think we do have an advantage at the start because the Ginettas are really light. Today I tried that on Tunku again and it worked. I thought I could only hold him for maybe three corners but I did more than that and I was pretty proud of that.
“Samson and Dilantha were right behind me, I thought they were having a battle but Samson made a dive on me. Then Dilantha was right next to me, so I closed the line. It was really close, but I knew that the Porsche couldn’t outbrake the Ginetta so I held my line and then I was cruising but I had to look in my rear view mirrors a lot” said a smiling Yu.
Behind Yu and Malagamuwa, Eric Cheung had a quiet race pacing himself between the two battles in front and behind him. Three Lamborghinis were locked in a battle against one Porsche for sixth place with Billy Fung, Siu Tit Lung, Marc Cini and Siu Yuk Lung.
The foursome changed positions a few times throughout the race with the elder Siu brother, Siu Tit Lung, holding sixth for six laps before suffering from an engine failure at the start of lap 7 and parking his car on the curb at turn 2.
Meanwhile, Cini and Siu YL changed positions twice before Siu YL finally took sixth,, benefitting from the retirement of his brother. Behind them, Billy Fung and Byron Tong had their own private tango almost rubbing bumpers for the remainder of the race. Fung maintained his line, not leaving any room for Tong to overtake.
Two laps to the end of the race, Siu YL, who broke away from Cini, caught up to Cheung and on the final lap, as Siu YL tried to overtake Cheung, the duo touched. Cheung spun from the contact with damage to his rear left while Siu YL continued despite the front right damage to his bonnet.
Cheung recovered to rejoin the race and reclaimed his position when Siu YL spun as his bonnet flipped open at the second last turn. Despite the damage, he continued, crossed the finish line and parked his car on the start finish straight.
